Fiber-To-Chip coupler

Taillaert et al., Jap. J. App. Phys. 45, 2006

The grating coupler couples light from an optical fiber to a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) and viceversa.
The working principle is based on the constructive interference, at a given angle, of the light diffracted by a grating, generally created by periodically alternating waveguides (WGs) with different thicknesses and lengths.
For deployment in applications requiring large bandwidth coupling from a fiber or a fiber array to a PIC and viceversa.
